Living room rug size
When looking for a living room rug, consider your furniture and take note of the various layout options. If it’s an open floor plan, the rug should help define the space and improve the acoustics.

- Front legs onAt the very least, the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on the rug.
- Leave a borderKeep 12–18 in (30–45 cm) of bare floor between the rug and the walls.
- Size upIf you are between two sizes, choose the bigger one. It makes the room feel larger.
Dining room rug size
A dining room rug needs to hold the table and every chair, even when the chairs are pulled out. Add at least 2 ft (60 cm) on every side of the table, then round up to the next standard size.

- Table plus 4 ftAdd 2 ft (60 cm) on each side of the table to get the smallest rug that works.
- Chairs stay onWith the chairs pulled back, all four legs of every chair stay on the rug.
- Flat or low pileA flat or low-pile weave lets chairs slide in and out easily.
Bedroom rug size
A bedroom rug should sit under the bed and reach out on both sides, so your feet land on something soft when you get up. For most beds, that means placing it under the lower two-thirds.

- Lower two-thirdsThe rug starts below the pillows and runs past the foot of the bed.
- 16–24 in each sideSo your feet land on the rug whichever side you get out on.
- Or two runnersOne runner on each side suits a smaller room or a heavy bed.
Kitchen rug size
In a kitchen, rugs work best as runners and mats where you stand most: at the sink, the stove and along the counter. Keep clear of oven and dishwasher doors, and leave a little bare floor around the edges.

- 6–12 in clearLeave 6–12 in (15–30 cm) between the rug and the cabinets so doors and drawers still open.
- Where you standPut rugs at the sink and the stove, where you stand longest.
- Add a non-slip padA pad keeps the rug flat and its edges from curling.
Tape it out first.Mark the rug’s edges on your floor with painter’s tape and live with it for a day before you order.
